Is It Time for Manufacturers to Test and Endorse Green Products in Mountain Biking?

Mountain biking is all about adventure, connection with nature, and pushing yourself to the limit. Yet, ironically, some of the products that help keep our bikes performing lubricants, brake fluids, suspension oils, tyres, sealants, and cleaning products can leave an environmental footprint.

That’s why eco-friendly MTB products are gaining attention. But with new biodegradable and sustainable options hitting the market, one question remains: should manufacturers actively test and endorse these green products?

On the Trails

Mountain bikers now have more options than ever to ride sustainably:

  • Brake Fluids: Hydraulic brakes are essential for control and safety. Traditional brake fluids are toxic if spilled or disposed of incorrectly. Biodegradable alternatives promise similar braking performance while reducing environmental impact.

  • Suspension Oils: Forks and shocks rely on high-performance oils. Eco-friendly oils minimize chemical runoff, reduce pollution, and often last longer between services.

  • Biodegradable Tyres: MTB tyres are a significant source of waste. New tyres made from recycled or natural materials are designed to decompose more safely when worn out.

  • Eco-Friendly Lubricants: Chains, derailleurs, and pivots need lubrication. Biodegradable lubricants provide protection for the drivetrain while minimizing harmful residues on trails.

  • Tyre Sealants: Traditional sealants contain chemicals that can harm soil and water. Eco alternatives maintain tubeless performance while reducing environmental risk.

  • Cleaning Products: From muddy post-ride washes to regular maintenance, eco-friendly cleaners remove grime without introducing microplastics, phosphates, or harsh solvents into the environment.

These products are great but riders often hesitate because performance and warranty concerns remain a big question mark.

Why Manufacturer Testing and Endorsement Matter

The difference between a green product that works and one that risks damage lies in testing and endorsement. Here’s why it’s crucial:

  1. Safety and Reliability: Mountain bikes face extreme forces—jumps, steep descents, wet and muddy conditions. Manufacturers can ensure that green brake fluids, suspension oils, and lubricants perform safely under these stresses.

  2. Warranty Protection: Using an untested fluid or lubricant can void suspension or brakes. Manufacturer-approved green products remove that risk.

  3. Consumer Confidence: Riders are more likely to switch to eco-friendly products if the bike brand they trust has tested and endorsed them.

  4. Market Standardization: Endorsement helps separate truly sustainable products from greenwashed marketing claims, giving riders clear guidance.

Warranty Claims: The Key Barrier to Adoption

There's no denying that mountain bike components are expensive and one of the biggest hurdles for green MTB products is warranty coverage. Many riders are understandably cautious because a component failure can be costly. Manufacturer testing and endorsement directly address this:

  • Brake Fluids: Using the wrong hydraulic fluid can damage callipers, master cylinders, or seals. A manufacturer-endorsed biodegradable fluid ensures braking performance without risking warranty denial.

  • Suspension Oils: Forks and shocks are precision systems. Oils with incorrect viscosity or chemical composition can cause premature wear or seal damage. Using approved green oils protects warranties.

  • Eco-Friendly Lubricants & Sealants: Chains, derailleurs, and tubeless systems are sensitive to chemical composition. Manufacturer testing ensures these products won’t degrade components, keeping warranties valid.

  • Tyres and Biodegradable Compounds: Tyres affect ride quality, safety, and suspension performance. Manufacturers can test biodegradable tyres to confirm compatibility and durability, protecting riders from denied claims.

  • Cleaning Products: Harsh solvents can damage suspension seals, frame coatings, or carbon components. Manufacturer-approved eco-cleaners reduce this risk while still being environmentally safe.

Without manufacturer endorsement, riders risk voiding warranties even if the product is labelled as eco-friendly. Endorsement turns “risky” into “safe,” providing a clear path for riders to maintain performance and stay covered.

Challenges and Opportunities

Adopting green products isn’t just about finding alternatives it requires investment and testing:

  • Performance Matching: Some biodegradable or eco-friendly products may still fall short of traditional performance standards under extreme MTB conditions.

  • Testing Costs: Every new brake fluid, suspension oil, or tyre requires lab and field testing to meet manufacturer standards.

  • Education: Riders need guidance on how to properly use green products to avoid warranty issues or performance problems.

However, the payoff is substantial: safer trails, a healthier environment, and riders confident that their sustainable choices won’t compromise performance or warranties.

Leading the Charge

Mountain biking is deeply connected to nature. Manufactures supporting green products is not just an environmental gesture; it’s a responsibility.

When manufacturers step in to test and endorse these products, riders gain:

  • Performance assurance in extreme conditions

  • Warranty protection against accidental misuse

  • Confidence to adopt sustainable practices

  • Clear guidance on which products are truly safe for their bikes

The trail ahead for green MTB products is promising, but adoption hinges on trust. Endorsement by manufacturers is the bridge between innovation and rider confidence.

The real question isn’t whether green products are viable, it’s whether the brands behind our bikes are ready to back them every step of the way.
